Computer Backups

When was the last time you made backups of your computer?

It is very easy to underestimate the importance of good backups.

I’m not just talking about one backup every few months, I’m mean several backups. Often. And backups of those backups!

I’ve been in the computer business in one form or another for my entire career. I really enjoy it which is why I decided to make my own business helping small businesses use computers more effectively.

There is one thing that really brings me down with this line of work. It’s that phone call from a client where they have a very different sound in their voice. It might be after a storm went through, after an employee was asked to leave, a laptop that got dropped, a small spill of a drink on the keyboard, or after something as simple as pushing the wrong button at the wrong time. There is a sound of concern, a hint of panic, a hesitant explanation… the story of how something extremely important is lost from their computer. There is a desperate request for me, their trusted computer guy to bring their data back from the ether.

Alas, sometimes, I can’t bring into existence that which no longer exists. (Sometimes I can… but don’t depend on it!!)

Backing up your computer is so important. Those pictures of your honeymoon or the grand-kids, the accounting records for the last few years, the data that runs your entire business – you usually don’t think about backups until after those very important files have been lost. Can you remember the last time you’ve backed those files up?

How do I make a backup?

If you aren’t currently making backups, I like a program called:

Acronis True Image

With this software, backups can be scheduled to run as often as you like. All you need is an external hard disk which you can purchase at most computer shops and you also have a cloud backup option that you can take advantage of as well.

If you’re not sure how to get started or feel a bit intimidated, please feel free to contact me with any questions and I’ll be glad to help set things up for you.

Now please, go make a backup. :-)
